British MP Diane Abbott speaks on the vile abuse she has received as a black woman in parliament. She was the first black woman to be elected into the House of Commons and since becoming a member, over 30 years ago, has received so much backlash. It has surged as of recently because of social media making it easier for people to reach her but it is nothing new.
Diane is not perfect and like other MPs has made a few mistakes make but the harsh criticism she faces is disproportionate, that cannot be denied. It is just proof of how intolerable this country really is. Diane is attacked from all sides, her character is assassinated, her appearance (which is always tied in with her race and gender) and her intelligence. She went to Cambridge university and is definitely more qualified than most of her white male counterparts who can get away with murder. She was berated and mocked when she fell ill recently and it wasn’t only by the public but Tory MPs; apparently everyone can be sick but a black woman. No, she must be strong always. Being able to withstand all of this is only a testament to her strength and resilience though she shouldn’t have to experience this in the first place.
To be a visible dark skinned black woman in England is hard.
